Item: A Juicero Press
Acquired by the RIAV: 2020
This $700 juicer is, by all accounts, a marvel of engineering. The packaging is beautiful and the gears are perfectly calibrated. The only problem is that the machine is entirely useless and that its purported health benefits don't exist.
Juicero, founded by Doug Evans in 2013, raised almost $120 million from sundry investors including Google Ventures and KPCB, until they were brought down by a Bloomberg exposé showing that the $10 juice bags can be squeezed with your hands.
Don't cry for Doug, though – he's still out there pitching raw water and broccoli sprouts as effective treatments for autism.
